Aran knitting originated in the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland and is characterised by intricately patterned sweaters that involve knots, cables, bobbles, and complicated stitches including diamond, zigzag, and honeycomb. It is thought that in the early 1900s, women of the Aran Islands began to knit these sweaters for the islander men who worked as farmers and fishermen.
Historically, a yarn thickness of 3/5 was used in Aran weight garments. This heavy count enabled quick knitting and a rounded, wholesome appearance which filled stitches beautifully. These yarns were traditionally hank dyed, a process that was gentle and slow and ensured the finished product had a luxurious touch.
